Attracting Birds

The best way to attract birds to your yard is to provide proper habitat - plants for food and shelter, an exposed mulch layer and water. This is discussed under Natural Habitat. To enhance the experience, various feeders, nest boxes and waterers can be used. This is discussed under Human Assist.

The three most important elements of a landscape that is attractive to wild birds are:

  • Native Plants
  • Exposed Ground
  • Water

Other things you can do to make your yard more attractive to birds include:

  • Have a Vegetable Garden
  • Plant Berries and Fruit Trees
  • Plant Nectar Bearing Ornamentals
  • Keep Chickens
  • Keep Bees

To help illustrate important differences between a landscape friendly to birds and one that is not we offer:

  • A Personal Story

And since many other folks have put their time and talents to this issue, we offer:

  • Web Resources

Human
Assist

While providing proper habitat is a wonderful and sustainable way to attract birds, the experience of interacting with wild birds can be significantly enhanced by use of feeders, waterers and nest boxes.

A feeder placed near a window, for example, yields close-up views, wondrous in and of themselves and helpful in identification. We are pleased to offer:

  • Wood Frame Feeders
  • Tube Feeders
  • Vintage Glass Feeders
  • Hummingbird Feeders
  • Feeds & Seeds

Many birds are ground nesters, while other birds nest in cavities (holes in dead trees). For safety reasons, we rarely let dead trees or "snags" stand in urban and suburban locations. To help cavity nesters find a home, we offer:

  • Bird Boxes
  • Bat Houses

Bees &
Benificial Insects

  • Beekeeping

  • Nectar Plants

  • Mason Bees

  • Ladybugs, Lacewings
     & Mantis

  • Butterflies
